Facebook. In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s this website where people can connect with friends of one another. They made a film about it.

Anyway, one of my jobs at the library is to do web development. One idea we had is to connect our WordPress blog, LibraryBuzz to our Facebook status feed. In order to do this, I have to create a developer account. Before I could do that, I had to prove to Facebook that my identity is true.At first, I was real reluctant to hand out my info over the Internet. I also find it absolutely ridiculous that a company demands my government issued ID. Who knows what the hell they’re going to do with it.

Here is what happened:

UPDATE: I’m not the first person that this has happened to.

Are you using an authentic account?: 1
Are you using a duplicate or secondary account?: 2
Do you understand that it is a violation of Facebook Policies to create malicious, misleading, or spammy apps?: 1

Hi,

In an effort to maintain a culture of authenticity on the site, Facebook requires users to provide their real first and last names.

If you believe you are being prevented from creating apps by mistake, please reply to this email with a digital image of your government-issued identification. Make sure the identification you provide meets all of the following requirements:

– Must be government-issued (e.g. passport, driver’s license)
– Must be in color
– Must clearly show your full name, date of birth, and photo

If possible, please save this file in JPEG image format.

You may black out any personal information that is not needed to verify your identity (e.g., address, license number). Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.

Note that writing in and submitting your ID multiple times will not result in a faster response. Once you submit your initial request, it is placed in a queue and responded to accordingly. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause while we’re investigating the issue.

Thanks,

Phoebe

Can’t I use my faculty ID? I really don’t feel comfortable transmitting any of that stuff over the Internet.

For all I know, you could be Anonymous or Antisec!

Hi Junior,

We apologize, but the only way we will be able to verify ownership of this account is if you reply to this email with an attached color image of your government-issued photo identification confirming your full name and date of birth. If you do not have access to a scanner, a digital image of your photo ID will be accepted as well. Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.

Again, please note that we will not be able to process your request unless you send in proper identification. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hi Phoebe,

Here is my driver’s license. Important information has been blacked out and please note it shows my first name and not the suffix (Junior) that I go by.

thanks,

Hi Junior,

We will not be able to assist you with your inquiry based on the ID you provided. Facebook requires all users to use their accurate first and last names. It is also important to note that using fake identification is against the law.

Thank you for your understanding,

My response:

Dear Phoebe,

I don’t understand this, so don’t thank me for it. My name is Abubakar Remigio Tidal, Jr. I go by “Junior” because going by “Abubakar” in post-9/11 New York City makes me personally uncomfortable.

Junior is part of my legal name on my birth certificate, passport, yet unfortunately not on my NYC license because they don’t include suffixes. Don’t ask me, I don’t work for the NY DMV. Whatever. I gave you my ID and jumped through your hoops. The ID I gave you wasn’t fake; I blacked out what I didn’t want to share with Facebook. I have attached a picture of a fake ID since you obviously don’t know what one looks like.

The only reason I want to be a “developer” is to connect my work’s wordpress blog with it’s facebook status. I don’t even like using facebook, but it’s for work and my paycheck does awesome things like pay my rent and my bills.

What do I have to do to make this work? change my name on facebook??!?!?
